Wallowing in the Wonderfulness of Wallows (Album of the Week)

There aren't enough guitar bands anymore. There especially aren't enough shimmery guitar bands like there were in the 1980's. We had a minor resurgence in the early noughties but then it quickly vanished Thankfully, we have LA's own Wallows to tide us over until the next big comeback of pop guitar bands. Their first full length dropped recently and it's a corker! Perhaps they will be the ones to make dudes with guitars a permanent fixture on the music scene.

Here is the first track. The whole album is this good. Go buy it!!

Nilufer Yanya: In Your Head (Track of the Week)

London's own Nilufer Yanya is exactly the kind of fresh, new energy we need in the music scene right now. Her first full length, Miss Universe, dropped last week and still get over how different it sounds from all the rest of the pop rock divas out there. Maybe it's the fact that she writes her own songs and sings like a love lorn crazy maniac. Or it could just be that she hits my soul in weird places. Regardless, she's amazing and it's a great start to a career!

Here is one of the many great cuts...

Meat Puppets: Warranty (Track of the Week)

Phoenix Arizona's own Meat Puppets have been delighting me for four decades. They are just a fun band that are a true pleasure to listen to on a regular basis. Their latest full length, Dusty Notes, is their first in six years and the Brothers Kirkwood, once again, do not disappoint.

Here is the opening track...

Durand Jones and the Indications Give Us The Morning (Album of the Week)

I love soul music. I love it with all of my heart and, well, my soul. Durand Jones and the Indications are keeping the flame alive for soul lovers everywhere in the most spectacular of ways. Their second full length, American Love Call, just dropped and it is wonderful. It's more than just the Album of the Week. It's a contender for Album of the Year. It's that fucking good.

Here's the opening track...

And the whole rest of the album is just as magnificent. I feel like I'm in the 1970's and Marvin Gaye is making albums again! Who knew that Bloomington, Indiana (home of John Mellencamp) could produce another amazing artist?

Durand Jones and the Indications are on tour. Check them out when they come to your town.

Weezer: Zombie Bastards (Track of the Week)

I've been a peripheral fan of LA's own Weezer over the years. The simple fact is that I need to buy their entire catalog as I only own a few pieces. Their latest full length, The Black Album, is quite strong, containing 10 magnificent tracks. Here is my favorite...

Jonny Fratelli Grows Up (Album of the Week)

Jon Fratelli, leader singer and guitarist of Glasgow's own Fratellis, has decided that it's time to grow up in a Burt Bacharach, Johnny Cash sort of way. His second solo album, Bright Night Flowers, is nine tracks of music that grandpa would be proud to kick back and relax to on a warm, summer evening. And I mean that in a good way. Here is the title track...can't you just feel the lounge all around you?

Lily and Madeline: Supernatural Sadness (Track of the Week)

Indianapolis's own Lily and Madeline are just the salve that I need for this way too long winter in Minnesota. They've just released their fourth full length record and it is wonderful. Here is my favorite track. It makes me dream of a summertime cafe!
